Inthiseditionoftherace,achangewasmadetothenon-eliminationlegpenalty.Inadditiontobeingstrippedofalltheirmoneyandreceivingnoallowanceforthenextlegoftherace,teamswereforcedtosurrenderalloftheirpossessions,exceptfortheirpassportsandtheclothestheywerewearing,fortheremainderoftherace.(Thispenaltycametobereferredtoas"mugging"byfans.)Theywerealsonolongerallowedtobegformoneypriortothestartofthenextleg(afterthenextlegstarted,theycanbegformoney).Theracerscouldalsoreceiveorbuyclothingortoiletriesfromotherteams.
InSeptember2005,Season7wonaPrimetimeEmmyAwardfor"OutstandingReality-CompetitionProgram",thethirdconsecutiveawardforthetelevisionseries.AlthoughSeasons5and6werealsoeligible,producerschoseSeason7sinceitwasthemostrecentinstallmentoftheshow.
